COLLABORATIVE PRINT MAKING WORKSHOP

WHAT TO EXPECT

In this workshop Neva will give us deeper insights and reflections into their art. They will then lead us through the basics of lino carving where each participants will get to carve their own small stamp. 

At the end of this session each member will gather to create a collaborative print piece with all the stamps created throughout the evening. It is through this workshop that we hope you leave with a sense of accomplishement, connection to others and feeling like art can be accessible to everyone.

Neva Nowazek is a settler on W̱ SÁNEĆ and Songhees Nation land who explores themes of their Métis culture, disability, gender, nature, and the intersectional qualities of identity through their interdisciplinary practice. Exploring relationships between life, identities, and material culture, they reconcile personal and societal struggles. Nowazek creates both two and three-dimensional works using watercolour, acrylic paints, plasticine, fabric, string, and beads.

Nowazek's colour palette draws from the beauty of their queerness, childhood wonder, the natural world, and Indigeneity. Nowazek juxtaposes the social and systemic struggles of oppressed minorities and natural processes like death and decay with their lively saturated colours. A common thread in their work is navigating the joy and community that comes from identity alongside the discrimination and difficulty of creating space in a world not built to uplift people like them.
