Being Seen and Celebrated For Who You Are Is Liberation.

Life drawing is the practice of drawing from a live model, and it’s a fantastic way to sharpen your observation and basic drawing skills. Beyond that, life drawing can also be a deeply meditative experience, allowing artists to focus on the process of creation rather than the final product. It’s an opportunity to disconnect from our cognitive interpretations of an object and focus on drawing what we truly see—not what we think we see. This project invites artists to enter a mindful state of creation, rather than focusing solely on technical skill.

‘To Be Seen’ Life Drawing offers a unique approach to life drawing. Here, the act of witnessing holds significant importance. But what does it mean for individuals who may not always feel comfortable being seen in their truest form? How can we use art as a medium to witness people embracing their authentic selves?

For this project, the public is invited to volunteer as life models for the event. While traditional life drawing often involves nude models, we encourage our models to present themselves as their truest selves—whether that means wearing cultural regalia, an outfit they don’t feel safe wearing in public, gender-affirming clothing, or anything else that represents who they are. Artists will be tasked with mindfully observing and capturing the model's authenticity in their drawings.

Note: Technical skill and figurative drawing education will not be the focus of this event. However, participants of all skill levels are welcome! A resource pack with foundational knowledge will be sent to all attendees prior to the event.

Materials included: Paper, Clipboards, drawing pencils, and charcoal. If you need any other supplies, please feel free to bring them!

Event Structure

Each event begins with a relaxed gathering where participants can enjoy snacks and beverages.

Part 1 of the event focuses on explaining this unique approach to life drawing, its significance, and engaging in warm-up activities to prepare for the drawing session.

In Part 2, the model will have the opportunity to share why they chose to present themselves as they did—whether that’s explaining their clothing, recent changes in their appearance, or anything else they feel is important. They may also highlight specific features they would like the artists to emphasize in their drawings. The life drawing session will then commence, ranging from short poses (2-5 minutes) to longer sessions (around 20 minutes). At the end, both artists and the model can share their reflections on the experience of being seen or seeing someone in their authenticity.

*While this is the general structure of the event, each event may vary depending on the model's needs.

Application Processes

Volunteer Model Eligibility and Application Process

Thank you for considering being a model! This role offers a unique opportunity to be fully seen and celebrated. As a token of appreciation, all volunteer models will receive a free ticket to a future event or drop-in studio session at Nova Arts Hub.

Volunteer Model Eligibility: Nova Arts Hub is designed for community members from historically oppressed communities who are interested in using creativity to explore new paths toward liberation. When we say "historically oppressed," we refer to communities that have faced or continue to face oppression—this may include people from the global majority (Black, Indigenous, people of color), cultures that have been oppressed, queer and trans folks, and others. These examples are non-exhaustive.

If you resonate with this description, we encourage you to apply. Additional eligibility requirements include:

  • You must be 18 or older.
  • You must be able to travel to the Nova Arts Hub location at the Royal Oak Shopping Center.
  • Due to the public and highly visible nature of our location, we currently cannot accommodate nude modeling (all of our walls are windows).

Note: Depending on your current mental and emotional state, being observed for an extended period can be challenging. Please consider whether this experience might be difficult for you. If you have any hesitations or uncertainties, don’t let that stop you from applying. Mention it in your application, and we can work together to create a support plan that ensures you feel fully supported throughout the process. This might include meeting beforehand, debriefing afterward, or adjusting the agenda to meet your needs.

Application Process:

To apply as a model, please click here and fill out the application form. The form will ask for key details, such as your accessibility needs, how we can support you in staying still during the drawing, and other relevant information.

Once you submit your form, you will be emailed with any follow up questions from Nova or to respond to anything in your application. If everyone is still enthusiastic and feeling comfortable, your name will be added to the volunteer list. Once a date is selected for the event, an email will be sent to all volunteers. Volunteers will have a specified amount of time to express their interest and availability. When multiple volunteers share interest in the same event, names will be selected by random draw and priority will go towards the volunteer who has not yet modelled for us. The selected artist will be emailed directly to discuss further.

Artist Participant Application Process

Like any of Nova’s events, please buy your ticket on our website under the tab ‘events’. If you are new to Nova Arts Hub programming, please also fill out the initial registration form. Due to the sensitivity and intimacy of  this event, specific details will be sent to you beforehand with information (for example, information or requests from the model).

FAQ

 Preparation and Participation

  • What if I've never done life drawing before?
No problem! This event is open to all skill levels, and we will provide a resource pack with basic guidelines before the event to help you get started.
  • What should I bring to the event?
We’ll provide basic materials like paper and pencils, but feel free to bring your own favorite drawing supplies if you prefer.

Can I attend if I’m not comfortable drawing people?Absolutely! This event is as much about the process and experience of observing someone fully as it is about drawing. You’re encouraged to participate at your own comfort level.

Logistics and Accessibility

  • Is the venue accessible for people with disabilities?
Yes, the venue is wheelchair accessible, and we can make additional accommodations as needed. Please let us know your requirements in advance.
  • What if I’m running late or need to leave early?
We understand that life happens! The first 15 minutes are dedicated to getting comfortable in the space, so that gives you time to get there if youre running late. However due to the intimate and vulnerable nature of this event, we ask that you stay the whole time once you arrive to respect the model.

How do I get to the venue? The Nova Arts Hub is located at the Royal Oak Shopping Center. Parking is available, and we are also accessible via public transit. Detailed directions will be provided after registration.

Emotional and Mental Well-Being

  • What if I feel uncomfortable being observed as a model (if I apply)?
Your comfort is our priority. We can discuss any concerns in advance and develop a support plan tailored to your needs. We want you to feel safe and celebrated throughout the experience.
  • What if I’m feeling overwhelmed during the event?
Treat your application form as a support plan. We want to reflect on all the ways that we can support you in your participation. If you still have questions or needs after reading the application form, please reach out.
  • How do you handle emotional sensitivity during the event?
We approach this with care and respect. The environment is meant to be supportive and non-judgmental. All of this will be outlined in the email sent out to participants and the model beforehand. However, if you have specific questions, don't hesitate to email novaartshub@gmail.com

Technical and Artistic Concerns

  • Do I need any prior knowledge of life drawing techniques?
No prior experience is necessary. The focus is on observation and the process of creation rather than technical perfection.
  • What if I don’t like how my drawing turns out?
That’s completely okay! The goal is to engage in the process and explore your creative expression, not to create a perfect piece of art. Consider this as artistic practice instead of creating a “masterpiece”.

Will there be instruction or guidance during the drawing session? While there won’t be formal instruction, warm-up activities and a resource pack will provide guidance. We are not trained in figurative drawing.

Post-Event and Feedback

  • Can I keep my drawings after the event?
Yes, your artwork is yours to keep. You can take it home as a reminder of the experience. Please note that the images you create may be representing a very vulnerable and authentic state of the model. If the model has sensitiviites or specific needs around the finished artwork, this will be specified in the event details beforehand.
  • Will there be an opportunity to discuss or share our drawings?
Yes, there will be time at the end of the event for both artists and models to share their thoughts and reflections, but this is entirely optional.

How can I provide feedback about the event? We value your input! After the event, you’ll receive a brief survey where you can share your thoughts and suggestions for future sessions.
